I was listening to NPR today and they were discussing how McCain's choice comes across to the various female demographics. It really solidified for me what I had already been thinking...he blew it.
Sarah Palin is a guy's girl. She does not appeal to women at all. She is one of those women that men LOVE because she is "feminine" yet isn't afraid to get dirt under her nails. It really seems to me that McCain is totally clueless about this and figured that any woman would appeal to women voters. In fact, this type of woman seems almost insulting as a pick for VP. It seems ridiculous to pick a former beauty pageant participant that still seems to take her fashion cues from Barbie and think that the choice will come off as a strong pick. It is not a strong pick. It is an attempt to appeal to women while appeasing male sensibilities. The pick is very popular among Republican males but among women it seems Palin is at best mildly irritating. She is not the type of woman other women can envision going shopping with or talking about men with or bonding over a bottle of wine with. As strong as Hillary's personality is, I can still envision connecting with her over shared experiences, whereas with Palin I feel she is more focused on being appealing to men than developing strong female friendships.
I cannot articulate very well why I feel this way, but I know that there are different types of women. There are those that have mostly female friends and those that have mostly male friends. Those that see other women as competition and those that see other women as allies. Those that always look perfect and wear make-up to the grocery store and those that go to the store in gym clothes after spin class. Those that look the part and act the part (PTO mom with perfectly dressed khaki wearing boys and girls with bows in their hair that match their outfits) and those that are genuinly engaged in their life and focus not on appearances but on character and actions. I know that plenty of women in both of these categories and can identify them pretty easily. I simply cannot believe that McCain could not also understand this about women. But he chose the man's woman, not the woman's woman, and I jsut can't understand why, except that he is a man! Duh!
